Green Energy Park Selected for Flagship Green Ammonia Project in Brazil

12 December 2024 – Green Energy Park's innovative green ammonia production and export facility in the State of Piauí has been selected as a flagship initiative under the Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) Project Support Programme, reflecting its alignment with ITA’s mission to decarbonize heavy industry and transport at scale.

The first phase of this project represents an investment of approximately USD 4.5 billion and aims to achieve an export capacity of 2.1 million tonnes of green ammonia per year. This phase alone is projected to avoid up to 3.2 million tonnes of CO2e emissions annually, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional ammonia production methods.

In addition to its export focus, the project will support domestic industrial applications of green hydrogen, including the production of green steel, and establish a green shipping corridor to Europe and other global markets.

Bart Biebuyck, CEO of Green Energy Park, shared his enthusiasm:
"We are excited to work with the ITA to accelerate our transformative green hydrogen projects in Brazil. COP 30, in 2025, is the perfect venue to showcase the implementation of a Giga-Watt-scale energy transition project leveraging the unique and natural advantages for producing green hydrogen available in the North-East of Brazil."

Adding to the significance of this initiative, Rodrigo Rollemberg, Secretary of Green Economy, Decarbonisation, and Bioeconomy at MDIC, commented:
"Brazil offers unique opportunities for the decarbonization for all countries, given its comparative advantages to become a global leader in low-carbon products. ITA will certainly contribute to achieving these goals, which are aligned with the National Strategy for Industrial Decarbonization, under development by the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services."

Faustine Delasalle, Executive Director of the ITA, emphasized the importance of the project:
"These flagship low-carbon production facilities represent the type of industrial investments that we need to see multiply in the country and around the world to achieve our collective climate goals. They also demonstrate there is a real economic opportunity for Brazil in green industry growth. Working closely with our partners in Brazil, we will improve the policy and market environment in which they operate to allow these and similar projects to thrive."

As part of the ITA Project Support Programme, the Piauí facility joins other groundbreaking low-carbon initiatives in Brazil. The programme’s goal is to address real-world challenges, such as demand creation, policy support, and financing, to accelerate projects toward final investment decisions and construction.

Green Energy Park is committed to leveraging its expertise and innovative platform to drive cost-effective, large-scale hydrogen production, positioning Brazil as a leader in the global low-carbon economy.
